Most unions use email for their campaigns and to stay in touch with their members.
But how many use email effectively?
We’ve seen in Australia and the US the enormous power inherent in email – with the Your Rights At Work campaign and with Obama. Even thought Twitter and Facebook are growing rapidly, email is still king when it comes to campaigning.
Many unions do not follow basic etiquette in email, do not carefully craft email content and do not track the results of their email campaigns.
With the number of free or inexpensive email tools now available to unions, we as a movement need to step up and use email more effectively.
Some email tips from AlexWhite.org
- Keep it short and simple
- Don’t use ineffective subject lines
- Don’t attach unnecessary files
- Don’t write in CAPITALS
- Watch out for list fatigue
- Check for grammar, spelling, formatting, emoticons, and abbreviations
- Don’t use a background colour or fancy fonts
- Track email open rates and clicks
